Oct 12, · This is about the Boy Scouts allowing girls in. I think the Boy Scouts are under pressure because they’re losing members. They’re under pressure to do something new and look .
Inthe organization lifted the ban on openly gay scouts and inended the prohibition on gay leaders. Earlier this year, the Boy Scouts of America also said it will allow scout members that self-identify as male, creating room for transgender members. The two organizations have developed markedly different curriculums over the past century. In their earliest years, Boy Scouts teachings were imbued with a more frontiersmen ethos connected wyat the national narrative of moving west, while the Girl Scouts were a more urban movement teaching both domestic and outdoor skills, said Tammy Proctor, the head of the history department at Utah State University and author of the book Scouting for Girls: A Century of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
I spoke with Proctor in order to understand the historic separation between the two lookk and why they seem to be at odds over the question of co-education. Our conversation has been lightly edited for length and clarity.
Tammy Proctor: When [Robert Baden-Powell's guide book for scouting] Scouting for Boys was first published serially inthere was a lot of interest among both boys and girls. It was a movement designed for boys, but a lot of girls got a hold of the book and were doing scouting.
In some cases, they even wrote-in to headquarters using their initials rather than their first names, so wht were kind of unofficial girl scouts. But early leadership got concerned because they were afraid that boys would be turned off from a youth movement that had girls in it. Baden-Powell enlisted his sister as head of the girls version of the movement, called the Girl Guides, and published the first girls version in gir,s then the organization got off the ground in These early years were kind of messy and they really felt strongly that it should be a single-sex movement for each, that their development was different.
When the movement spread to other countries, including the U. There might be a year or two lag between a boys movement and a girls movement. In the U. And in the same way, the Boy Scouts were founded out of the boy movement in Britain. What brand of cars are made in china were legal battles—and battles what is a meander neck the media—over this.
But in the Vor. That being the case, they developed separately. They also have a very close relationship here in Utah to the Church of Latter-Day Saints, for instance.
Hosking: Did the Girl Scouts face backlash for wanting to empower women as they expanded? Proctor: The movement, from the beginning, has always had a pretty strong emphasis on empowering girls, but sometimes that meant empowering them to be strong mothers of families. But in some communities over the years, the Girl Scouts have gotten fire for being too progressive with the social issues they take on and the projects they encourage.
For example, they did a big career program in the s and s about girls in science, which involved girls going to a space center to learn about what it would be like to be an astronaut or taking how to prevent the influenza to different kinds of occupations like firehouses.
In some places, that pushed some buttons, but the national organization has stood pretty firmly behind that notion of empowerment, I think. Hosking: If the two organizations have developed so independently, how did we get to a place where Boy Scouts feel pressured to allow girls in?
Proctor: There has been an ongoing debate about whether this should happen or not. Internationally, there are many countries that have co-educational scout olok. But in those cases, the two organizations worked together and they merged to create a co-educational movement.
This is about the Boy Scouts allowing girls in. And Boy Scouts have long-encouraged female leaders for the younger kids and have been less interested in having female leaders for teenage boys. Proctor: I think clubs generally in the U.
To add on an additional activity of doing scouting might just be the tipping point. The Boy Scouts have been struggling with a lot of issues regarding their social attitude, particularly regarding homosexuality. The Mormon Church announced recently they might create their own movement, which would pull some members away, as well.
I had this great letter that a boy wrote in about how he and his sisters were starting a scout troop and it was because they were playmates and they were a group of friends. Skip to oook Site Navigation The Atlantic.

Wearing unflattering or extremely poorly-sized clothing says you don't care about how you present yourself. The particular style is not as much a factor as how you wear it. You can wear whatever style is comfortable for you, whether it be trendy, alternative, casual or sporty, as long as it's appropriate to who you are. For example, if you're 30, and dress like you're 15, you'll look like you're trying to recapture your youth, not like you're a trendy year-old.
The same is true for any style—if it doesn't accurately reflect who you are, it will be seen as either clueless or fake. Neither impression will suggest "handsome" to anybody. Keep an eye out for men you consider well dressed. When you're at a mall or walking down the street, take note of guys who appear to be fashionable. What things do you first notice? Women often look at shoes—a detail many guys gloss over.
Because so many guys gloss over that part, taking the time to select, wear, and maintain a nice pair of shoes is a great way to boost how you're perceived. Hire a personal shopper. If you have absolutely no fashion sense and have the money, hiring a personal shopper can be a good initial step.
They will help you identify your style, select clothes for you and then show you where to obtain these clothes on your own in the future. If you don't have the money, have a stylish friend or relative go shopping with you for the day. Listen to them, but be aware that they may have their own style sense that's not quite your style sense. If most of the choices they're suggesting don't appeal to you, don't feel like you have to go with their suggestions.
Thank them for their time, and try another personal shopper more attuned to your sense of style. Adopt signature pieces. Having a signature item of clothing can help you stand out and draw attention to your style. Take Steve Jobs, for example. His signature look was a black turtleneck, blue jeans, and New Balance running shoes. Jewelry, such as a trademark ring, necklace, or watch can be effective, and useful too.
Tinted shades. You should only wear these outdoors, but a good pair of aviators or tinted shades draws attention to your face. Avoid run-of-the-mill cologne and get a scent that no one else has. This can be a great conversation starter. Don't wear too much, though, or the conversation it starts will be behind your back, and it won't be complimentary. Take voice lessons. We all know how to talk, but being able to speak clearly and enunciate well will enhance how you are perceived. Know that voice is an impression itself.
Part 2 of Keep hands and fingernails clean and neat. Wash your hands regularly. Your fingernails should be free of dirt and trimmed evenly. Do not bite your fingernails, or chew on your cuticles—you'll look nervous and neurotic. Take time to comb and style your hair. With extremely rare and often accidental exception, walking out of the house with bed head never looks good.
Wash and brush your hair on a regular basis. If you have the time and inclination, consider using a paste or gel to style your hair, but follow the "less is more" rule with styling products, and don't use too much.
Care for your skin. Many people, perhaps unfairly, associate bad skin with bad hygiene. Wash your face thoroughly, especially after any physical activity.
Avoid razor burn if at all possible. If you're prone to acne or other skin conditions, see a dermatologist to help you get your skin in shape.
Take showers. Do this every day—it's an invigorating way to start the day, and looking clean and smelling good doesn't hurt in the perception department, either! Eat healthy. Eating healthy will help with many things such as keeping a good weight, avoiding cavities, having a good complexion, and being energetic.
Sleep well. Getting eight hours or more of sleep every night will do wonders for your complexion, energy and overall appearance. Exercise regularly. Looking handsome goes beyond your style.
Exercising regularly not only helps with your appearance, confidence, and energy, but releases endorphins that make you feel good, and therefore more appealing to others. Part 3 of Be confident. Nothing—not bone structure, not a haircut, not even sensible shoes—will do more for how you are perceived than exuding a sense of self-confidence. Cultivate it, work to achieve it, and follow the steps in this section to build it. Just be aware that it can't be faked—it has to come from the inside.
Stand up straight. Hunching over can not only cause back problems but makes you look as if you have no self-confidence. Sit up straight too, for the same reasons. Smiling will make you appear happy.
It will also keep you from looking tired and in despair. Look people in the eye. It's only polite when talking to someone to look them in the eye.
Don't stare—look at different parts of their face occasionally, but beyond that, maintaining good eye contact will show confidence and self-assuredness on your end. Include your email address to get a message when this question is answered.
